3. MAIN FEATURES OF NEW DRIVERS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3.1 DirectSound
This is a new audio architecture developed specially for Windows 95 games.
It provides low-latency mixing, hardware acceleration, and direct access to
the sound device.
To take advantage of this feature, you need to install the Microsoft Game
subsystem for Windows 95.
3.2 Full-Duplex
This means that both playback and recording can be done simultaneously
This feature enables application like I-Phone and DigiPhone to run in
Full-Duplex mode if you have only one sound card.
Contraints:
1) Playback and recording must be of the same sampling rate.
2) Full-duplex and DirectSound are mutually exclusive.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The features below are applicable only to Sound Blaster AWE
32 family of products.
3.3 SoundFont 2.0
This is a new digital audio file format for wavetable synthesizer
sounds. It is a public standard that is portable, extensible, and
carefully designed to support arbitrarily complex modulation and
synthesis networks. For more information, please visit the web site at
http://www.creaf.com/emu/.
3.4 MPU401 Emulation
This feature allows you to enjoy the richness of wavetable synthesis
music when playing DOS games that support MPU401, but do not directly
support AWE. To enable or disable this feature, use the AWE 32 Control
Panel.
3.5 AWE 32 Advanced Power Management (APM)
The AWE driver now supports APM. The primary aim of this feature is to
reduce power consumption in Personal Computers.
